I don’t generally share many images of my own children… but I have found a new love this summer. FILM. I started out on film back in 2004 and quickly went to digital. I loved the freedom and instant gratification that digital allows. For business there is no other way that would work for me.

I feel immense pressure when I photograph my own children. I don’t like using point and shoots… EVER. They anger me. I can’t ever see past the technical deficiencies and as a photographer I expect more of myself!  Since I photograph babies and kiddos all day long the last thing I want to do it bring my big pro camera home and shoot more. Even when I do shoot my own children I would be head swapping like crazy and editing every single photo. OR worse they would sit on my hard drive untouched a year later. A few of my photog friends have gone to film in the past year or so and one day I realized it would be the PERFECT solution for my family photo dilemma. I repurchased my beloved Nikon N80 ( which ironically is the first camera I ever laid my hands on 7 years ago!) and plugged in some black and white film and was in LOVE. I LOVE LOVE LOVE film for my personal photography. I feel so free and inspired. I no longer am a slave to the perfect photo when photographing my own kids. I have been shooting for fun and for art… not for perfection. I love the grainy soul of these images and how raw and authentic they feel. Don’t get my wrong. I LOVE the work I do in my studio. But I felt like I was missing out of the REAL life’s of my kiddos. I have hundreds of beautiful,perfect portraits of my children and I adore them all, but finding film has freed me to capture them in a more documentary style which is very refreshing for me.
